Earlier this year, I was interviewed by Apoorrva Subramaniyan as part of Animaker’s new L&D Academy video series, “Genius Talk.” They publish interviews with a number of L&D leaders to share their expertise. They interviewed Shannon Tipton on microlearning, Ross Stevenson on AI, and Moe Ash on gamification. My interview (unsurprisingly) focused on scenarios. This is Scenario-Based Learning 101, which primarily serves as an introduction to the topic for people just starting out with scenarios. I unpack some of the common misconceptions surrounding scenario-based learning, discuss the different types of scenarios, and offer practical advice on how to effectively apply scenarios in different areas of training. Although this interview was for Animaker, our conversation did not focus on their tool or on animated videos.
Part 1: Defining and Differentiating Scenario-Based Learning
The interview is divided into two parts. Part 1 focuses on defining scenario-based learning, identifying types of scenario-based learning, and how to use them effectively. Our scenario-based learning 101 discussion also makes some connections and differentiation between scenarios, microlearning, and gamification.
- The Ingenious Journey
- Types of scenario-based learning
- How to use scenario-based learning effectively
- Using microlearning in scenario-based learning
- The overlap between Gamification & Scenario-based learning

Part 2: Creating scenario-based learning
In part 2 of our scenario-based learning 101 discussion, I shared tips and examples for creating scenarios. I also touched on AI in this segment.
- Create a challenging and supportive scenario-based learning program
- Pitfalls to Avoid in Scenario-Based Learning Program
- Scenario-based learning examples
- Use of AI in scenario-based learning
- Rapid Fire Round

Set the stage: Make training relevant and authentic with scenarios
Wednesday, February 19, 2025, 9:45 AM – 10:45 AM EST
“What does that have to do with me?” This is the question that learners often ask when they take training or e-learning. Many instructional designers struggle when faced with dry or dense content. Often the training feels disconnected from learners’ day-to-day work. Because learners see it as irrelevant, they are less likely to remember their training and less motivated to change their behaviour. You need a way to help learners recognize the relevance of training, which will then improve performance.
